Traces
'Traces' is my personal project about exploration of the power of genetics across multiple generations.
To visualise my close resemblance to my paternal great grandmother Anna Gapova I recreated a self-portrait in her likeness. To reconnect with my ancestors and their past lives I sing a traditional Slovak folk song. The song is the key link to the memory of my late great grandmother through which, briefly, I bring her to life. I hope to encourage viewers to reconnect with their ancestral roots and prompt them to revive their cultural heritage and retrace their unique genealogies.
'Traces' also echoes a message of concern regarding the slow disappearance of national folk arts and crafts owed to the rising popular culture of globalisation.
'Traces' bridges the past and present, a reminder of the trajectory of life and the perpetuation of genetics, all affecting memory and the core values of our human condition.
